Malaysia

Gateway to ASEAN

A founding member of ASEAN, with an established manufacturing base and major ports on the Strait of Malacca. From Kuala Lumpur we work with companies entering Malaysia, and with Malaysian companies selling or sourcing abroad.

Why Malaysia.

Malaysia's case is what it makes, where it sits and what it has signed. English is widely used in business, which makes the day-to-day work easier.

Kuala Lumpur3.14°N 101.69°EGateway to ASEAN
Malaysia in Southeast Asia. Kuala Lumpur, the city we work from, is on the peninsula beside the Strait of Malacca. Port Klang is on that coast and the Port of Tanjung Pelepas is at the southern tip. East Malaysia is on Borneo.

A founding member of ASEAN

Malaysia is a founding member of ASEAN. It is also a party to two wider trade agreements, RCEP and CPTPP. If you plan to sell beyond Malaysia later, we draft your agreements so they can be extended to other ASEAN members.

On the Strait of Malacca

Malaysia is on the Strait of Malacca, with major container ports at Port Klang and the Port of Tanjung Pelepas. Whatever you buy here leaves from a port that shipping lines already serve.

An established manufacturing base

Malaysia makes things, notably electrical and electronic products. A buyer can deal with the manufacturer directly. A company that wants a technical partner should look here first.

Halal certification and Islamic finance

Malaysia is a centre for both, which matters to food and consumer-goods companies that sell to Muslim customers and to any deal financed on Islamic terms.

Malaysia is easier to enter than to win.

A foreign company can open talks in Kuala Lumpur quickly. Turning talks into orders is harder, and these are the two things we check first.

Competition
Malaysia has its own manufacturers, and the trade agreements that let you in let other suppliers in too, so we test where your offer stands against both before you spend on entry.
Standards
Halal certification and product standards take preparation. Buyers will ask to see the paperwork. We establish what applies to your product and take you through the process.

What we can do in Malaysia today.

The Kuala Lumpur office has two kinds of client: companies coming into Malaysia, and Malaysian companies going abroad. Each entry below is work we take on today.

If you are entering Malaysia

For companies based outside Malaysia, whether you come to sell or to buy. Nigerian companies can start with our Lagos office.

Strategic partnerships

Your counterpart in Malaysia may be a manufacturer, a distributor, a licensor or a joint-venture partner. We find and vet the candidates and structure the agreement. Then we stay on to manage the relationship.

Business development and advisory

Before you commit, we test your offer against the suppliers already selling in Malaysia. If it stands up, we act as your business development team in Kuala Lumpur and carry deals to signature.

Market access and trade

We act as your local representative and arrange distribution. We also work out which standards and certifications your product needs. If halal certification is one of them, we take you through the application.

Technology and digital solutions

We introduce you to Malaysian technology providers where you need one, and we set up order handling and reporting so you can manage sales in Malaysia from your head office.

If you are a Malaysian company

For Malaysian manufacturers and technology companies that want buyers or partners abroad. Today that means Nigeria, through the corridor.

Strategic partnerships

We find your counterpart in Nigeria, a distributor or a joint-venture partner that our Lagos office has vetted, and agree the terms in writing before any goods or know-how move.

Business development and advisory

We build the commercial case for Nigeria with you. Then we sell alongside you: our Lagos team finds the buyers and is in the room when you negotiate.

Market access and trade

We take Malaysian products into Nigeria. Our Lagos office acts as your representative there and manages import requirements, product registration and distribution. We also source Nigerian goods for Malaysian buyers.

Technology and digital solutions

We place Malaysian platforms and digital services with Nigerian operators, under licence or as a managed service. Our Lagos team supports them locally.

Licensed Malaysian firms handle legal opinions, tax filings, customs clearance and freight. We choose and coordinate them. Your proposal says who is responsible for each part.

How to start in Kuala Lumpur.

Four steps take you from a first conversation to work under way. You are free to stop after any of them.

  1. A first conversation

A call or a meeting with the Kuala Lumpur team. You say what you want to achieve, and we tell you plainly whether we can help.

  2. A scoping session

A working session to pin down the goal and what stands in the way. By the end we know which of our four capabilities the work needs.

  3. A written proposal

It sets out scope, responsibilities, timeline, fees and how results will be measured. Nothing is left implied.

  4. Start

Work begins at Discover, the first stage of the SBPG Core Method™, with a named lead in Kuala Lumpur.

Our Lagos office is where Malaysian products meet Nigerian distributors and buyers. You deal with one team: what you agree in Kuala Lumpur is what Lagos works to.
